The digital divide – the gap between those with access to technology and the internet and those without – is more than an inconvenience; it’s a barrier to opportunity. But there is hope, and part of the solution lies with partnering across business and community lines to solve problems or the people that need it the most.

As we enter our fourth year of addressing the digital divide, we figured it was time for a bit of a reFresh. You might notice a new look-and-feel throughout our website and our Impact Blog, and (coming soon!) we’ll be launching a the reConnect.

reWerk is thrilled to share an exciting update on our latest collaboration! Thanks to our incredible partners at Rheaply, we were connected with LinkedIn, who generously donated high-quality furniture, which we delivered to our community partners at Digital NEST for their new Stockton location.

The All People’s Community Center was founded with the goal of establishing a multi-ethnic, multi-racial community center during a time when segregation was still the norm. reWerk donated furniture to their service center, and we’re happy to play even a small part in supporting their important work.

Thanks to donations of furniture and tech from our corporate partners, we were able to help The Step Forward Foundation completely furnish their office space — including a new expansion office to serve even more community members!

The concept of a circular economy promise sustainability, inclusivity and empowerment. How does this relate to the digital divide and the opportunity gap?

With the rise of generative AI, there’s a lot of swirl about the risks and opportunities that new technology brings. Like any new technology, its impact is largely dependent on whether or not we use it as a force for positive change. And while the opportunity for good is vast, we can’t also help but think about how AI might inadvertently deepen the digital divide, especially for historically under-resourced and underrepresented communities.

In a world increasingly defined by digital connectivity, the importance of equitable access to technology cannot be overstated. The recent release of the 2024 National Educational Technology Plan (NETP) by the U.S. Department of Education underscores the urgency of addressing the digital divide, particularly for marginalized communities. At reWerk, we see this as a big opportunity, signaling a concerted effort to close the gaps in digital access, design, and usage – gaps that hinder educational opportunities for far too many students.

reWerk facilitated a donation of 80 task chairs from the Hayes Mansion to Digital NEST to equip their Salinas and Watsonville locations.

We made a donation of standing desks and chairs to the Boys and Girls Club of the Peninsula, which empowers youth with equitable access to social, academic and career opportunities to thrive.

We dropped off a donation of TVs, monitors and chairs to our nonprofit partners SoLa Impact to support them in their important work, inspiring the next generation of Black and Brown tech leaders and innovators.

reWerk recently donated furniture to the Step Forward Foundation, which is a nonprofit providing specialized legal services to low income communities.

We imagine a world where all communities have access to the tools and knowledge they need to support themselves and their families, to thrive professionally and to flourish in their creative pursuits.

reWerk facilitated a donation of 20 laptops to our incredible nonprofit partner: Create Now, which has empowered underserved youth through art programs, events and excursions for over 25 years.
